Welcome to the website of Balliol Opera, a friendly musical theatre group based in West Moor in Newcastle upon Tyne. We stage one major show a year, usually in November, generally a Broadway or West End musical. Recent shows include 'Carousel', 'Scrooge', 'Annie Get Your Gun' 'Crazy For You' and 'The Music Man'. We have performed at the Jubilee theatre in Gosforth, and also The People's Theatre in Heaton.
This year we are doing 'Mack and Mabel' in the performing arts centre of RGS Jesmond, where we have performed since 2007. We hope you join us either on stage, or in our audience.
We usually produce a smaller spring production in April or May. Last year's was in May, at the RGS new performance centre. We covered a variety of numbers from shows such as 'Westside Story', 'Guys and Dolls', and 'The King And I'.
Our shows are, of course, ambitious but successful, and we have built a reputation for imaginatively overcoming the many obstacles our limited resources impose upon us.
Just because we are amateur it doesn't mean our shows need be 'amateurish' too. We always strive to stage the best shows possible, in a dedicated and professional way and we always have a good time while we are doing it.
This is by any measure a very sociable Society. After rehearsal, many of us reconvene in a local pub. We have many organised social events throughout the year, such as meals out, barbecues, strawberry tea-parties, ceilidhs, karaoke events, quiz nights, 70s/80s nights, badger watches, and car treasure hunts!
